The workplace provides an opportunity for employees to find out where they can access support and services to improve health and well-being. For example, several screening programs are recommended for both men and women at different stages of their lives.

Here are a few that are well worth promoting.

Action 1. Healthy Heart checks are free for men and women over 40 and provide a basic 'MOT' which includes determining Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as blood cholesterol and glucose levels. GP surgeries offer this service as do some community pharmacists.

Breast cancer screening is not routinely offered by the NHS to women under the age of 50 because the density of the breast tissue in younger women makes it more difficult to detect problems and also because the incidence of breast cancer is lower. Action 4. Skin cancer is rapidly becoming one of the most prevalent cancers in the UK. In fact, one in three of all cancers diagnosed in the UK is skin-related. It is important for everyone to carry out regular examinations of their body and to be aware of any moles that appear to be changing in size, shape, color, etc. Any signs of change should initiate a trip to the GP for a potential referral. Alternatively, some private providers can carry out either full-body screening or single mole checks.

Action 5. Smoking cessation initiatives are becoming increasingly common in both GP surgeries and community pharmacies. As well as regular motivational counseling, most initiatives also include the supply of nicotine replacement products such as gum, inhalators, and patches to help reduce cravings.

Action 6. It is estimated that up to 50% of people taking regular medication don't take them correctly. Local pharmacies offer free medical check-ups, which is paid for by the NHS.

Bringing health and well-being into the workplace sends out a really positive message of proactivity and commitment. Many practitioners happily offer their services regularly and who are prepared to offer discounted rates for your employees. On a practical note, it is essential to ensure that any practitioner has the appropriate qualifications to do the job, liability insurance and is registered with a professional body or association.

Action 8. Finally, it is great to be able to facilitate giving something back to society and one of the opportunities to consider is a blood donation. Many people I speak with want to donate blood but find it difficult to get to one of the blood donor venues on a specific date. You can help them by arranging for a mobile blood donor unit to visit your company premises. Your employees can then pop out at pre-arranged times to give blood.
