Why Donating to Charity Is Important

"It is important that you give back." This point has been ingrained in all of us since childhood but very few practically act on it. There are literally thousands of charitable institutions trying to make a difference.

The "feel good" experience after donating is a feeling to the treasure which makes donations for a cause so important. Donation to organizations helping victims caught in conflicts or aiding those who are victims of economic slump creates social awareness.

Donating to charity is not limited to just money. One can donate food, clothing, pet supplies and even blood. Before deciding to make a charitable contribution, one needs to be aware of the organizational details and their activities so as to make the personal contribution worthwhile.

Though the primary motive to contribute to charity is altruism, also great tax benefits exist for the donors. If the gifts are tax-deductible, the actual cost of the donation is reduced by tax savings. As the donors' income tax bracket increases, the real cost of the charitable gifts decreases making a contribution more attractive to those donors in the higher income group.

According to a study, donating to charity is good for the brain. A team of economists and psychologists at the University of Oregon have found that donating money to charity activates the regions in the brain associated with pleasure.

The reward reaction after donating funds is very intense and the phenomenon of voluntarily giving results in a warm glow of pleasure which has shown enhanced health benefits. The study supports the idea of "pure altruism" but another reason for donation is that survival of a group helps the individual cause. At times donation funds freshwater projects in developing countries.

Each $20.00 given for an individual, assures safe drinking water for umpteen years. Other benefits of donation are helping in building hospitals, educational institutes, distribution of medical supplies, improving civic amenities in schools, assisting in vocational training, all such activities guarantee mental and physical betterment of the less privileged.

Some donate to charity to reduce clutter from their homes which leave more space and is also accompanied by the "feel good" experience. Many donate to honor and cherish the memory of a loved one who has passed away. At times an edifice or educational institute is constructed which is named after the deceased person.

However, the real reason why donating to charity is important, is the genuine desire to help the less fortunate by providing them with economic support which would ultimately make them self-reliant citizens.
