Share Your Junk Collection Before You Haul It Away

Everyone has heard the axiom "One man's junk is another man's treasure" and this is never more relevant than when we talk about recycling, reusing, and reducing. If you look around your house and realize you have too much stuff the easiest action to take is to load it up and haul it to the dump. Before you make that rash decision let's take a look at what you can do to help yourself and the environment.

A yard sale is a great way to clear out some space in your home and put some money in your pocket. You will be stunned at what people will buy so do not be afraid to put even the most obscure items up for sale. If you plan on getting rid of it any way you might as well throw it out there and see what you get. Get with a few friends and make it a group yard sale. The more items you have, the more people you will draw, the more stuff you will sale.

I have started a network of like-minded friends that always check with each other before we get rid of something or go out and buy something new. My hedge trimmer decided to stop working but before I went out and bought a new one I checked with my buddies. An acquaintance had an extra hedge trimmer and was willing to give it to me. I saved myself from buying a new hedge trimmer and I made some space in his garage. My little group has traded back and forth many items over the years so there is no way to say exactly how much money we have saved or how much we have kept from the landfill but I am sure both are substantial.

Donating items that still may have some value is a great way to keep it out of the landfill and help your community. If you do a little research you should be able to find a local church or a reputable charitable organization. I enjoy donating to a church in my area because I know that the items will go to help someone who really needs it. If that is not incentive enough for you then be sure to take into consideration that you will receive a tax break on anything you donate. Any break from the taxman is a good break.

It always feels good to turn a piece of junk into cash, help a friend, or help someone in need. Also, not only have you cleared out some space in your garage or basement but you have kept something useful from heading to the landfill.
